22.04.2018 The Berlin timber loading line is a residue of World War II. This area was a military base and the starting point of the narrow-gauge field track that the Germans made the prisoners build from Hyrynsalmi to Kuusamo during 1942 and 1944. By the field track there was a prison camp in Taivalkoski where you can still find the »Hanging Pine»; a tree where Germans hanged prisoners of war.
