Smith had spent a massive portion of his career working his way up to become the Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, a enterprise deeply rooted in the historic Canadian beaver fur trade. The Maple Leaves: Surrounding the original shield, the maple leaves were introduced to visually tie the private enterprise to the raw sovereignty of Canada. Interestingly, CPR popularized both the beaver and the maple leaf as unifying corporate icons long before they were officially adopted as official national symbols of Canada. |
